STEM Cumbria

STEM Cumbria is an interesting organisation. Our school has worked with them before. The next event is:

Big Bang North Cumbria – over 2 days
Tue, 19 November, 00:00 – Thu, 21 November, 00:00
Where: Energus, Blackwood Road, Lillyhall, Workington, Cumbria CA14 4JW

What to expect:

  • Hands-on activities provided by STEM based businesses in South Cumbria.
  • Hands-on activities showing the application of STEM to College courses.
  • A chance to meet ‘Oscar the Robot’. Oscar will perform the meet and talk to pupils at the entrance to event.

The Science & Engineering Fair is aimed at students from KS2. All stands and activities will have a focus on the application of STEM skills in business and training and give ideas about jobs for the future. All stands will provide inter-active learning experiences for your pupils.

Companies and organisations supporting the event are still to be confirmed.

This is third Big Bang Fair in Cumbria and follows the success of the first event held at Rheged in 2011 and the second event held at Carlisle in 2012. It will follow the pattern of the National Big Bang Science and Engineering Fairs held in March each year in various cities.

I have been finding out how businesses use IT and how it changes their businesses. I have found an open source software package called OpenERP that offers many of the features businesses need. The main company OpenERP S.A. is interested in OpenERP being used in schools and universities to allow students an incite into both the IT systems and business processes used today.

They also have a project using the Raspberry Pi to power EPOS systems. It’s available for backing on Indiegogo. I’ve backed it as I think it will be interesting to see affordable open source solutions to this.

Welcome to my new blog. Here I am hoping to share my thoughts about development in IT and business systems as well as the new computing curriculum.
